Research Dispatches

13th April 2008

Team 1

The crucial role of timely intervention through monitoring and research which is one of the activities to be funded by the EcoEverest Trust Fund, becomes clear with the case of Shomare Village as an example. The Shomare Village is situated on the west bank of the Imja River on the old landslide debris and close to the active landslide. The research team observes that if the Imja GLOF takes place then there is the possibility of toe erosion by the Imja River which could slide down the whole of Shomare Village.

The picture shows the effect of Nare GLOF in 1977. The landslides are the remnants of the Nare GLOF (www.icimod-gis.net/theme/glof/album/nepal/imja%202006/pages/4929.htm - 3k -).

Team 2
An opportunity for spreading the word about the mission of the Eco Everest Expedition with high profile international figures arose at Namche, when Andreas and Verena Schild and Milan Tuladhar met with the Spanish/Chilean expedition at the Danfe Guest House, Namche. The High Mountain Group of the Army of Spain is led by Commander Fernando Yarto Nebreda and includes seven mountaineers from Spain and three from the Military Mountain School of Chile.

With ICIMOD’s expertise on glaciers and glacial lakes in the Himalayas and experience of Chilean glaciologists, Gino Cassasa and Andreas Rivera from the Centro de Estudios Cientificos de Valdivia there was a great deal of information exchange. Guillermo Collao Figueroa, another Chilean member of the team had participated in the Antarctic expedition.

Both teams are traveling together to Tengboche on 14th April 2008

Team 2 also visited Khumjung Village where Syangboche Airport (one of the highest in the world) is located. A must visit was to the school built by Edmund Hillary along with a stop over at a local monastery.

Andreas and Verona Schild blend in with the mood and ambience of the nature in Namche relaxing with fellow travelers while…

The magic of Namche transforms Milan into Charles Bronson with the cowboy hat sans the revolvers.
