20 April - 02 May 2008

2nd May 2008

On the way from Pheriche to Thukla, one of the porters brings down a load of garbage that had been collected from the Khumbu Ice Fall to Namche Bazaar. The garbage collection initiative is a part of the Eco Everest Expedition kick started on 20th April. In the picture, one can see the kind of garbage accumulating including oxygen cylinders.

A source of income for the porter and a cleaner Everest – look up on how you can contribute to this effort.

23rd April 2008

The history of Imja Tsho had shown the growth rate of 42m/year from 1962 to 2000. In the recent years from 2001 onward to 2006 the growth rate was found 74m/year (Bajracharya et. al 2007). The melting pattern/rate of the Imja glacier snout as seen in the satellite image of 2007 January and from the field observation in April 2008 indicates the growth rate is accelerating. It is expected that the Imja Tsho will grow by not less than 100m/year in the coming years. Many scarps and vertical ice cliff on the snout of the Imja glacier in contact with Imja Tsho and the fresh icebergs shows the active retreating of Imja glacier. As a result the length of the Imja Tsho increasing rapidly.

20th April 2008

Top notch people in the climbing sector Ken Noguchi, Pertemba Sherpa, Dawa Steven Sherpa and ICIMOD’s Paribesh Pradhan showed their commitment to making this climbing expedition a different one by cleaning the base of Khumbu Ice Fall. The hour long clean up exercise yielded tin can, cloth and waste paper.

In addition, debris from an Italian Helicopter crash that took place at Camp 2 in the 1974 expedition was found.
