Eco Everest Expedition 2008 in Google Earth

Following are the highlight features on the Expedition in Google Earth:

  • Virtual repeat photograph
    A unique set of repeat photographs showing the historic photographs of Everest regions dating back to 1950's and their present photographs, thus providing an empirical evidence of changes occurring in the region. A real photo exhibit will unveil at the Everest base camp on 19 April;

  • Dispatches as it happens
    Embedding news and dispatches of both scientific and climbing expeditions from remote mountain locations tracking the expedition in near real time;

  • Impact of climate change on glacier and glacial lakes
    This section presents classic case examples of three different lakes in the Everest region, firstly, the outburst floods of glacial lake in 1985 (Dig Tsho lake) and its devastating consequence local people and environment; secondly, the real-time monitoring of the fastest growing glacial lake in the Himalaya (Imja Tsho Lake) and early warning system; and finally, the mitigation measures of glacial lake (Tsho Rolpa). These case examples portray dramatic impact of climate change and its consequences in the fragile mountain environment and need for prevention and mitigation measures;

  • Multimedia and database
    This section presents information on Eco Everest Expedition and multimedia video clips helping to raise the awareness of climate change impact including Eco Everest Expedition video and access to interactive glaciers databases of the Everest region.
