Interview with Lakpa Tshering Sherpa at Thukla, a local hotelier who has witnessed the bridge that joins Thukla to Pheriche washed away by the Thukla river that comes out from Khumbu Glacier four times in 2007. He has been frustrated making this bridge again and again and tells the Eco Everest Expedition Research Team 1 that when he went up to find out the cause for the flash floods, he noticed small ponds of glacial lakes bursting, hence resulting in the small GLOF activities. Ken Noguchi, famous Japanese Alpanist arrives at the Everest Base Camp with his camera crew. On 30 April, I and Paribesh decided to go to visit the research team led by Prof. Fukuisan from Keio University at Imja Tsho. We left the Everest Base Camp at around 10 am went to Chhunkung via Kongmala pass (5535 meters). We reached Chhukung at 9 pm in the night after losing the trail in the dark, wondering around boulders and luckily finding the trail again. On 1 May, Paribesh and I left for Lake Imja Tsho. After 3 hrs of walk, we reached Imja Tsho. Imja to us looked very passive, dormant and frozen. Prof. Fukuisan' team had reached here the day before and they were already in their job, putting benchmarks on the peripheries of the lake and replacing the old broken field server. They were however disappointed that since the lake was frozen, they couldn't use the motor boats which they have brought with them to measure the depth of the lake. The history of Imja Tsho had shown the growth rate of 42m/year from 1962 to 2000. In the recent years from 2001 onward to 2006 the growth rate was found 74m/year (Bajracharya et. al 2007). The melting pattern/rate of the Imja glacier snout as seen in the satellite image of 2007 January and from the field observation in April 2008 indicates the growth rate is accelerating. It is expected that the Imja Tsho will grow by not less than 100m/year in the coming years. Many scarps and vertical ice cliff on the snout of the Imja glacier in contact with Imja Tsho and the fresh icebergs shows the active retreating of Imja glacier. The massive landslide after crossing the Bhote Koshi Bridge was still active while this picture was being taken. For a moment, we couldn't figure out what the rumbling sound was - was it from the Bhote Koshi River down below or the the rocks rolling down the ridge. The landslide of this scale is a result of Dig Tsho GLOF in 1985. The landslide did not occur immediately after 1985 GLOF but slowly afterwards due to constant erosion and other factors because of the sharp cutting of its banks. Finally, after six and half hours of walking up and down ridges, valleys, steep trails (those were not even trails)and huge boulders (trust me when I say those were not rocks), below and above active lanslides, the research team reached Dig Tsho glacial lake at an altitude above 4700 meters. Most of the team members were whistling instead of breathing by the time destination Dig Tsho was met. The wind was pretty intense and sharp piercing through our skins everytime it blew past us. The research team had to cover this stretch to make up for the day lost on 6th April due to cancellation of the flight to Lukla. Reaching Dig Tsho was a bliss in its own way despite terrible headaches, fatigue, and cold chilly wind blowing from evey direction. This is the outlet of Dig Tsho glacial lake. In 1985, this is where the Dig Tsho burst causing massive damage to the infrastructure,the Thame micro hydropower plant and the communities in the downstream path. On the video there is the interview with 40 year old Pasang Namgel. Pasang was in his shed (Yak) above the Dig Tsho lake when the outburst took place. He says that the lake was very high before the GLOF happened in 1985, and suddenly one day, there was a heavy rainfall followed by snow fall. The Bhote Koshi river in full throttle at a gorge near Thame village. In 1985, when the Dig Tsho lake burst near Dig, the water passed through this gorge with high pressure, damaging the landscape and the terrain on both sides of the gorge. The result is that the landslides are still active on either sides of the gorge. On the way to Top Danda, the research team of Eco Everest Expedition meets Ram Narayan Rai carrying his sick wife on a traditional doko all the way from Sangnasa to their village in Solu, more than a week away. The woman in the doko has a severe headache, constant vomiting, loss of appetite and is severely dehydrated. She had been admitted in Khunde hospital for almost a week and is now being carried down to her village. The team advised the man to put her on a liquid diet despite her refusal to eat any kind of meal - solid or liquid and also to give her water diluted with salt and sugar.
